Well, on Tuesday I went to see him lecture @ the Cooper Union. I have heard his name before, but never really got to see much of his work. Overall, I would have to say that I was pretty impressed. His buildings are all white, in the Spanish/Meier style, but they always had some sort of innovate feature, be it a giant garage door that opens and closes or a curtain that wraps around the building acting as a "curtain wall." One thing that he is famous for that didn't really do much for me was using paper tubes as building materials. Some of his later structural work with them was pretty impressive, but I guess the asethetic of them didn't really get me off much. Plus, I heard he would cheat too by filling them with concrete. Nonetheless, it was very interesting and I recommend that all of you check out his work if you haven't.

Oh, he also has a wide variety of work, from super lux houses to a lot of temporary relief housing for refugees and poorer people. Good call.

discussions up here have arrived upon pre-fabrication of certain detail specific dwellings. this kinda piggybacks gabes discussion of bucky. (the machine man himself) we all know studio 804, graft, krill architecture, and piercy conner...some which are purely conceptual and some that are in physical form. what do you think this construction method holds for the future of sustainability? will pre-fab prices come down low enough to start a wave of new techniques? or will we finally find a warehouse strewn landscape full of these production facilities?

Functional: Its a folly - functionality is moot
Relevant: Debatable, but thats its function to an extent

Are people allowed to walk through it, or is it just to be gazed upon? I assume it will be fully accessible - I see there is a rope around it at the moment.

I quite like it, but initially I was thrown by the organic [shudder to use that word] forms.

I also quite like the fact that the human hand has been involved, instead of what you might expect from more fabrication-driven projects.

athe theory of architecture has evolved through one issue as to how one can create perfect single buildings whatever they are. fact against this phenomenon is that there is almost a [complete absense of any coherent theory beyond the one of the single buildings] have we so long accustomed outselves to conceiving of building as separate entities that, today we suffer from an inadequancy of spatial languages to make a meaningful environment? i think we need to investigate the nature of maybe a 'collective form'. i think collective form represents groups of buildings and quasi-buildings [the segment of our cities] collective form is not a collection of unrelated, separate buildings, but of buildings that have reasons to be together.

how will our cities be 'formed' in the future? 'form' rather than 'design' --relating to luis kahn
will they be: compositional? [like most of the US?] megastructure? [like tokyo?] group form? [like most of europe?]

how will our cities hold a capacity for the new rush to re-inhabit the core? will there be a capacity? will we designate certain cities to become mega-node 'supercities'?

So I just got back from running around for two weeks and find this blog has gotten crazy, excellent. Not to beat a dead horse here, but well I enjoy beating dead animals. Anyway, timelessness is a notion of something that transcends time. I have been trampsing around Italy for a couple weeks and spaces do just this, they were made hundreds of years ago and still are just as relevant as they were originally, and probably more so. I don’t think the people get to decide if something is timeless, they simply discover that it is, through time. So time is the key here, almost all the buildings anyone mentioned as {timeless} are from antiquity, timelessness in recent building have not had experienced enough time for us to discover if their spaces have transcended their time, moved passed fashion to timeless. Is Ghery’s shitbox here in Prague timeless, no clue ask someone in a hundred years….

ok...so as nerdy as this sounds: i want better selection of model supplies. even for being out here for a couple months...they rock w/ their materials. why can't we have a better selection @ varney's? i say...outside bulk distribution. not go thru varney's...here are our issues with this rant. last year AIAs tried to do that very thing (go independent and save the students some cash on supplies)...shot down under first attempt to get funding from our department. regardless of the savings it would carry on to the students the department...no the college was opposed to any thoughts of that. reason: varney's funds our department on some occasions...like arch. evening. our dpt. doesn't want to cut bad blood w/ them...for that reason? perhaps...why are they not supporting us? breaking deals? i want revolution damit. i want support. i want multi layers of foam.

As long as we are talking about art, here’s whats going down in Prague
For the first time since high school I am taking art classes. Its flipping awesome. Here’s a rundown of my schedule:
_Computer Graphics- simply graphic design
_Photography- Pretty self explanatory
_Urban Design Studio- Studio on a huge scale, I have no clue what I’m doing…
_Ecology and Urban Design- both lecture classes but super cool
_Ornament- making squiggle things L. Sullivan style
_Figure Drawing- well naked people

The point is most of these are fine arts classes with an architecture twist, though in most I haven’t found the twist. The truth is I am probably learning more about architecture through these art classes than I do in architecture classes.

I realize the department has to teach a lot of things in 5 years but art that is not architecture should be apart of it. In fact when I was enrolling before freshman year, Lynn strait up told me not to take art classes, I wish she hadn’t, perhaps now I could draw.
