  PS1:debate
here are a couple of cuts from a discussion i was involved in about the new PS1 infill: pics: http://archinect.com/gallery/albums/userpics/ps1-sur.jpg

Sustainability: who cares, thats not the point
Functional: Its a folly - functionality is moot
Relevant: Debatable, but thats its function to an extent

Are people allowed to walk through it, or is it just to be gazed upon? I assume it will be fully accessible - I see there is a rope around it at the moment.

I quite like it, but initially I was thrown by the organic [shudder to use that word] forms.

I also quite like the fact that the human hand has been involved, instead of what you might expect from more fabrication-driven projects.

Originality?

Hasnt this been done a million times over? Greg Lynn is going to be dead and gone and rookie architects are still going to be making this shit, thinking themselves the first. You dont even know if you can move through it! Yeah, thats architecture. "Sustainability.who cares." Exactly. somepeople will throw any number of toxins in the air to masterbate in front of their peers. And how deep does this debate go? "It looks cool. It looks organic....maybe" Heavy, man.

what do you kids think?

Comments:
i am confused by this topic. are you one of the users? can you throw us a link to some of the background for PS1? I remember reading some stuff about the firm on archinect, but cannot remember the details of the design. cheers.

firm: http://www.xefirotarch.com/
PS1: http://www.archinect.com/forum/threads.php?id=20943_0_42_0_C

i'm not either...however, debate among many addresses the ever so popular debate over blobatecture. also, firm does not address linkage of greg lynn theory on fluid form. read all comments and post your own here. i'm curious about what you know and think.

there's a link to an archinect interview with the architect....anyways,

I have always thought of all of these pavillions, PS1, Serpentine Gallery, etc as more of just chances to experiment with new ideas and to try things that you wouldn't be able to do in a permenant project. It is made to be disposable, so in to an extent I believe that the ideas that are explored in them are disposable. I am not saying that they are bad ideas, more that they are more of a process than a final destination. But in regards to blobitecture, I don't have a problem with it. There will always be trends in life, for example you will have two new bands who have never heard each other perform, yet sound the same. Society has a way of influencing peoples thoughts and ideas on life and I think that blobitecture is one of these ideas. It's not good or bad architecture on a whole, you need to look at each building individually, just as you would any other style.

tak for the new link...i didn't see that one. yea, it's not a building by any means...but an experiment. which is fantastic that there are conditons that allow for a almost (for a better use of words) 'blank canvas'. PS1 is a walled court, which if you think about it is hard to make something in a blank, contextless space...where this blob stuff kinda works well. i've seen many great built examples of blob'ish all over, debates still range when delt with context. but in the words of rem: "...fuck context." -koolhaas from 'Bigness' in SMLxL

http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A2=ind0012&L=architecthetics&P=R1335&I=-1

i love context, almost as much as i love you sam...but it hard to create a blob that everyone loves.

i have read a bunch about this project today and can honestly say that the only thing i have learned [that i didn't get from the images of the exibit] was who the hell Hernan Diaz Alonso was and Xefirotarch's theory on architecture and digital design. to me this disscussion is opinion not architectural theory. bloby stuff is trendy and often cool. as with any other style or form type [what ever a blob is].
as for digital design it is nothing more than a fabulous way to express ones ideas. it is another media or tool for the designer or artist.
that is the deep end, in reality this exhibit is about artistic expression in an interactive 3 dimensional form and not much more. it is Alonso's ideas and asthetic vision physically manifested for public viewing.
i find the piece kinda sexy and appealing. the detailing is a little trampy [which can be sexy with just the right amount of mascera] but i don't see this as a piece of architecture [at least no more than any other piece of art you can climb around on]so i would say the physical delivery of the art is shabby but that may have been the intent. love you guys but don't give yourselves an embilsim over this sculpture.peace.

oh and as far as context goes what are you going to do on a minimal concrete exibition volume.
tom nailed it the blob lives well in this space. it moves through the volume like a glimpse of liquid a captured traveling
in the weightlessness of space. but not as well done.

discalimer: the last two posts are all the senseless ramblings of a mad man. they are not to be taken with offense or by that means seriously. thank you and good day sir.

I would agree, PS1 is more sculpture than architecture, and in that aspect I think that from what I've seen image-wise, it works rather well. Hell, he's obviously got people talking.

i think it's great. there is that line with form at one and and function at the other end. most buildings tend to fall somewhere in the middle. lord knows that we have to many building out there that are [on or near] the function dot, and know one out there complains. (why is it know one complains about a totally functionally building?) i think projects like this keep the balance with having it [on or near] the form dot. (why is it that people complain when you have something totally for form). i'm not sure, and correct me if i'm wrong, but the closer you get to caring about form, maybee the less you give a shit about context? because it's becomes more and more of an object....huh.....[thnking out loud] anyway, in my opinion we need more projects like this to even out all the functionally metal warehouses in this world.

now,

don't get me wrong, i personally love when you can make something functionally beautiful. But then again I would say that it would fall in the middle of the line.

art need no function other than to exist and be experienced
