WOAH!!! at first i thought it really was dr. evil, but then i looked at the mag!!!

btw, did you change the layout of the page around?

which
[ego]:
1_The self, especially as distinct from the world and other selves.

2_In psychoanalysis, the division of the psyche that is conscious, most immediately controls thought and behavior, and is most in touch with external reality.

3_An exaggerated sense of self-importance; conceit.

i think 3 can be destructive. ego to me is a barbaric way to show your importance. many architects are egotistical, this [i think]comes from the physical manifestation of their ideas. if you are truly talented and enlightened then you show humility not ego, because you know that what you are doing can be done by others and you have confidence that you can reproduce your success.just my take anyone agree to dissagree?

There is an inherit problem with that logic though, because if you are really all that good, then you will know that not everyone will be able to do it [if everyone could do it, then everyone would be amazing architects], which will therefore cause you to lose your humility. And then if you can reproduce your successes while others continue to not be able to, then you will lose even more humility just by the fact alone that you are succeeding and they are failing.

yea they are all suckers

that is sdrawkcab. while self confidence and ego go hand in hand they are not the same. ego is a lack of self control and a over zelous view of ones own talents and worth. humility like patience it is a virtue that is hard to come by but makes all the better person once you achieve it.
to me the real problem with having an ego, is that you then believe that you are somehow better or smarter than other people. when you think this you quit listening to people. this means that you are missing out on many of the lessons that these people can teach you[good or bad]. i believe that knowing what not to do can be better than having all the answers. a competative spirit and self confidence are healthy traits they inspire growth and push ideas as well as people. and humility is to be gained not to be lost. you must strive for humility like you do success, ego is a malus side effect of not being able to control one's self.
if your work is truley good others will recognize this and give you credit for rather than giving the credit to yourself.
ego is nothing more than the masterbation of ones pride. if you are going to get off on something let someone else do it for you.

gabe, i agree w/you, i was just trying to play devil's advocate (as usual)

i would like to add my excitement as to the use of 'masterbation' in intellectual context.

i concure with tommy's comment, excellent use of the vernacular gabe.
